Notes from the Common

A brilliant year of walks on Horfield Common

Our final bat walk of the year took place last Friday, bringing this year's programme of nature and history walks on Horfield Common to a close. It was a colder and windier evening than our previous bat walks, but the bats still put on a good show. We only detected Common Pipistrelles this time, but there were several of them out and they were remarkably active despite the conditions. It was a lovely way to finish what has been a really enjoyable series of walks.

Throughout the year we've explored Horfield Common from all sorts of different perspectives, discovering more about its bats, trees, wildflowers, pollinators, insects and history. The walks have been really well supported, and it has been wonderful to see so many people coming along to learn more about the wildlife and history that can be found right on our doorstep.

A huge thank you to Festival of Nature, local naturalists Steve England, Erik Swithinbank, and local historian Andy Buchan for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with us, and making the walks so interesting and enjoyable. And, of course, thank you to everyone who came along and supported them.

Following the success of this year's programme, we'll be looking at funding opportunities to enable us to organise more walks next year. We already have a few ideas and have had some great suggestions for future events, including a combined bat and nocturnal bug walk, which sounds like a particularly interesting one! We'd love to hear any other ideas for walks or activities that people would like to see on the Common.

What would you like to discover on Horfield Common next year? Do email us and let us know...
