autumn bat walk - with lightning

Our resident bat man was out again last night!

Local naturalist Steve England -Outdoor Learning led another of our bat walks around Horfield Common, and with a lightning storm flashing away in the distance, we were not entirely sure what the weather had planned for us. Thankfully it stayed away and we had a great evening.

We picked up Common Pipistrelles and Noctules with our bat detectors, while Steve shared plenty of fascinating facts about how they live, hunt and prepare for the colder months ahead. One attendee brought his kit-built "Fledermaus Detektor", which we are pleased to report was a success.

We also saw first-hand how the recent drought is affecting some of the trees around the Common, and were very pleased to find that Quab Pond is still holding some water despite the exceptionally dry conditions.
